The Department of Aerospace Engineering was established in 2007 and is positioned as a disciplinary and professional academic organization. Its main functions include talent cultivation in aircraft design and engineering, disciplinary construction of aerospace science and technology, and scientific research. The Department of Aerospace Engineering relies on HEU's advantages in the field of "Shipbuilding Industry, Marine Equipment, Ocean Exploration and Nuclear Application", with the characteristic direction of "aerospace, reliability, and cross media". It adheres to the comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor, and cultivates reliable and versatile talents with an international perspective, innovative spirit, competitive ability, and sustainable development awareness.

There are a total of 24 teachers in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, including 7 professors, 9 associate professors, 8 lecturers, and 23 teachers with doctoral degrees. Professor QI Hui is a member of the Teaching Guidance Committee for Aerospace Majors for Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education, and Professor WANG Zhenqing was a member of the Mechanics Guidance Committee for Higher Education Institutions of the Ministry of Education. Besides, the Department boasts 1 expert of the Science and Technology Commission, 1 reliability expert of SASTIND, 1 marine equipment expert, 1 reliability expert from the equipment and development industry, and 30 members of various levels of associations. The Department of Aerospace Engineering has one Party branch secretary, three branch committees, one grassroots leader, and one deputy director in charge of teaching. In the past five years, 5 monographs, over 100 SCI articles were published, and over 300 vertical and horizontal scientific research projects such as the Science and Technology Commission, SASTIND, the Civil Aerospace, and the National Fund, as well as more than 30 authorized patents. The department has won 1 second prize for National Defense Science and Technology Progress Award, 2 provincial science and technology awards, and more than 50 awards for various aerospace science and technology innovations.

At present, the Department of Aerospace Engineering has 5 research directions in the Aerospace Discipline, including nonlinear dynamics and control, reliability optimization and design of large structures, intelligent structures and composite materials for aircraft, overall technology for cross-medium vehicles, and complex dynamics modeling and intelligent control of high-speed aircraft. All research directions support the disciplines evaluation in mechanics and aerospace.
